Even as cracks appeared in the Jat agitation for reservation in jobs — they have been protesting for over a week in parts of Haryana,Rajasthan and Uttar Pradesh — the Haryana government has sought time till March 22 from one faction of the protesters to respond to their demands.

A delegation of Akhil Bharatiya Jat Aarakshan Sangharsh Samiti, led by its Haryana president Hawa Singh Sangwan, met Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda here on Sunday evening. “The Chief Minister has urged us not to disrupt the law and order situation in Haryana and other states till March 22. We have agreed to the Chief Minister’s request and called off our agitation till March 22. It is not yet decided whether we’ll clear the rail tracks and national highways till that time,or continue sitting there,” Sangwan told The Indian Express. “In case, the government fails to accept our demands till March 22,we will launch a massive agitation from March 23.”

On the other faction of the Jat protesters led by Yashpal Malik,Sangwan said,“Yashpal Malik is no longer our leader, nor he has anything to do with our agitation. There is a separate group of Jat protesters, which he is heading, some of them are also sitting along the rail tracks and even on the national highways. They should also suspend their agitation till March 22.”

However, the faction led by Malik continues camping along the rail tracks at Mayyar village in Hisar district and has also camped on the National Highway-1 (Delhi-Chandigarh stretch) in Sonepat district. Malik, who is camping in Uttar Pradesh and was detained by the UP police on Friday, said: “We are going ahead with our agitation and will not budge. We held a meeting with the Chief Minister, but nothing concrete came up. The government is just buying time on the basis of fake assurances. If the government has failed to do something in two years, how could we believe them that they will be able to do something in 20 days,as they are saying. There is a meeting of the Khaps in Jind district tomorrow, which shall decide further course of action. The other faction of Jats, led by Hawa Singh,is inconsequential.”
