Around four thousand Panjab University (PU) students of BCom-II were shocked on Wednesday after they appeared for their Cost Accounting exam,as the entire paper was based on theoretical questions, which were against the rules. According to the rules,50 per cent of the paper has to be theory and 50 per cent practical.

The students have demanded re-examination in the same subject. However,PU is yet to decide on the matter.

Sahil,a student at DAV College,Sector 10,said that basically, the subject of cost accounting is a practical subject and for the entire year, even students are taught practically. According to the rules, students who are weak in the practical part are given an option to opt for theory, and thus the paper has to have questions based on practical and theory questions.

“A wave of shock went across when students got the question papers. Those students who had studied practicals for the entire year or had opted for practical, how will they get passing marks?” he added.

Various colleges have written to the varsity regarding this goof-up.

Controller of Examination (CoE),Panjab University (PU),Dr Parvinder Singh, said that his office, till Wednesday evening, got a single complaint via fax from some Ludhiana-based college. “I have forwarded the received complaint to University Business School (UBS). It is the board of studies of the department that has to take the call. To address such kinds of complaints, proper procedure has to be followed. Depending upon the decision of the board,a decision will be taken,” he added.

While UBS chairperson A K Vashisht said that the matter will be looked into. “Students will be given a benefit after verifying the complaints,” he said.
