The Mohali police claims to have busted a gang of thieves with the arrest of four accused and recovery of jewellery, motorcycles, electronics, cash and other items worth lakhs.
The police claim that with their arrest, a dozen cases of theft have been solved and two of the accused are juveniles. The accused have been identified as Sunny Kumar and Subir Patra, both aged around 20; and the two juveniles who are both aged around 15. All of them had been living at Naya Gaon but originally belong to other states, according to officials.
In fact, one of the juveniles has already spent 14 months in a juvenile home in connection with a previous theft case. “As soon as he was released, he again started indulging in such incidents,” alleged Inspector Raghbir Singh, who led the police party which arrested the gang during a search operation on Sunday.
According to SP Harpal Sandhu, the police were searching various places at Naya Gaon on Sunday and the accused were arrested from a vacant plot of land near the village.
“Following their arrest and subsequent interrogation, gold and silver jewellery worth around Rs 1.5 lakh, 10 mobile phones, an Apple iPhone, ATM card, a stolen two-wheeler (Hyundai Activa), three motorcycles and Rs 11,000 were recovered. Around a dozen recent theft cases have been solved, six of which were registered at Naya Gaon while one was registered at the Mataur police station,” said Sandhu.
The officials added that the modus operandi of the gang included intrusion into houses by the juveniles through ventilating windows, after which their escape was facilitated by the adult members of the gang. “The victims of these thefts are coming forward to identify their stolen goods. The role of the juveniles is surprising as one of them has only recently come out of the juvenile home,” said SHO Raghbir Singh.
