Motorsport in the city is shifting gears with a first-of-its-kind Speed Sprint and an off-roading track

Nikhil Deep Singh Jaspal claims to have found a reasonably effective cure for the incurably hazardous ailment called road rage. Unbelievable? Not exactly. Come September 9,and former rallyist and rally organiser Jaspal, along with Sudev Barar and Gulpreet Aulakh, will hold city’s first of its kind Speed Sprint — a thrill ride-cum-competition for all those with the need to speed. Organised by the trio’s Team Chandigarh Adventure Sports, with a green signal from the UT Administration and the Chandigarh police,Speed Sprint is a test of speed, control and capping the distance in the shortest possible time.

For the same,a road in the periphery of the city — and within the jurisdiction of the UT — will be cordoned off for routine traffic on Sunday (September 8). The five-kilometre stretch of the double lane tarmac road is then going to be home to a single-stage high speed event. And the competitor who clocks the distance in the shortest time is going to be the winner. Mobikes,cars/SUVs,four-wheelers prepared especially for rallying are welcome aboard for this day-long event. To give it an official stamp,Speed Sprint is governed by the stringent safety regulations of the Federation of Motorsport Clubs of India (FMSCI).

“We have three categories. Zap is for professionals,Cross for the regulars, and Moto for bikers,” says Jaspal. He keeps the location under wraps for security reasons but assures that there will be marshals, ambulances and police on the spot. There will also be a special ladies competition apart from some novice categories. Participants can file multiple entries for various events.

Into rallying for 16 years,Jaspal and his team have been working on Speed Sprint for a couple of years now. “It has been funded by us and it took us two years to get it in action,” he tells us. The track will incorporate challenging aspects such as tight turns, high speed dips and jumps as well as elevation changes. Also, the format allows the drivers two chances to drive to improve upon his timing results.

While the team plans to make Speed Sprint a regular feature for all seasons, they are also excited about Uncaged, the first especially crafted off-roading track in the region that is open to general public. Spread over 40 acres in Dera Bassi,Uncaged is a trail-blazing track for times when the tarmac is just not enough. “We are making it into a motorsport resort complete with tents,food,beverage,off-roading classes,cook-out nights and a twin track,” says Jaspal. Now that is something to look forward to over a weekend.
