Four given life for murder of 22-yr-old

The Court of Additional District and Sessions Judge,Preeti Sahni Friday sentenced to life imprisonment four persons accused of murdering a 22-year-old hotel management student,Tajinder Mattoo,in sector 24,in 2010. One of the accused,Karan was acquitted by the court.

The four accused sent behind bars are Mohammed Kafil,Shiv Charan,Manu Sharma and Navdeep. The accused have been held guilty under Section 302 (murder),147 (rioting),148 (rioting with deadly weapons) and 323 (voluntarily causing hurt) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).

The case dates back to June 18,2010 when two groups of youngsters had a a clash in Sector 24 market.

Three victims,Tajinder,his cousin Salim and Salim’s friend Ajit were attacked by the four accused with swords and baseball bats.

The assailants chased the victims and stabbed the student with the weapons they were carrying. The police reached the spot and rushed the three victims to the Government Multi-Specialty Hospital (GMSH),Sector 16.

Mattoo,a resident of Nawanshahr and student of the Institute of Hotel Management Catering and Nutrition at Sector 42,succumbed to his injuries. Mattoo’s cousin Salim and their friend Ajit sustained injuries.

One of the accused,Manu,had reportedly used foul words against a girl known to one of Salim’s friend following which the accused had an altercation in Sector 41,a night before the incident.

The next day,Salim called up Manu and asked him to come to a park at Sector 41 where Manu was thrashed by Salim and Mattoo.

Following this,Manu called his friends and asked Salim where he and Mattoo were. Salim told him that they were in Sector 24.

Manu reached Sector 24 with his friends armed with daggers,and weapons and attacked Mattoo,Salim and Ajit in full public view.
