Bank records were burnt after a fire broke out in the IT department of UCO Bank in Sector-17 Bank Square on Saturday.
The front side of the top floor was gutted in fire. The fire broke out at around 7.15 am.
Bank authorities said some records, furniture, computers and air conditioners were damaged in the fire. The fire officials were informed about the blaze by the security guard of a bank in the neighbourhood, who noticed smoke billowing from the top floor of the bank. It took the firemen half an hour to douse the fire.
M L Sharma,Fire Station Officer,Sector 17,said the fire was controlled well in time. Since it was early morning, there were no rush of vehicles in the bank square, which enabled us to reach quickly. By the time we reached and started dousing the fire, the front portion was gutted, Sharma said.
Fire officials said the bank would issue an advisory to keep proper space outside their institutions even during the day,so that in case of a fire, fire tenders can reach in time. The area around the bank generally remains packed with two wheelers and cars, leaving very little space to move.
