The team at Quan, the new spa in town, likes to keep it basic and natural.

In the case of most spas and related services on offer in the city, often the emphasis is on elaborate rituals that come with a lot of fuss. Expecting something similar,we arrived at Quan Spa,a signature spa by JW Marriott,Chandigarh. What goes instantly in its favour is the fact that Quan is quietly tucked away in a not-so-busy part of the hotel.

The elevators take you to the fifth floor and open directly into Quan, which is a Chinese term for ‘spring water’. Here, one is greeted with a wellness drink and a cheerful team, led by Spa manager Manish Jaswal. There’s a lot of natural light pouring in everywhere and the basic styling of the spa gives it a fresh feel, unlike some other spas where overpowering incense often leads to a sneezing bout.

But Quan doesn’t any such pretensions. As Jaswal puts it,“We believe in simplicity and don’t want to confuse the guests with too much unfamiliar jargon.”

True to its name, the treatments — a little bit of beauty and more of wellness — draw on the “restorative” qualities of water and natural products sourced from sea minerals. There are six therapy rooms — tidy and no-fuss again — including one meant for Ayurvedic treatments.

The Quan Spa menu offers body scrubs and wraps, massage therapies and facial treatments, making full use of fruit extracts, marine algae and aroma oils. We recommend the 30-minute-long Coffee Body Polish. Priced at Rs 1,700,it’s perfect for those looking for an instant glow. The coffee,as we were explained,is carefully mixed with organic cane sugar and olive oil to create a polishing effect. Also unique to Quan is the music. As one lies in the dimly-lit rooms, the Oriental instrumental music starts on a low note. As the session progresses, the music also changes tempo. By the end,one gets to hear energising beats that are in sync with the state of the mind after the therapy.

But if one is looking for a more vigorous, albeit de-stressing massage, opt for Deep Renewal Massage (Rs 3,200). For an hour, the therapist uses strong deep pressure on specific tension areas of the body. It is advised to drink plenty of water after this massage to help the body’s natural elimination processes. “We find out what the guests require and also their health profile before recommending any treatment,” informed Jaswal.

All treatments here are unisex and there’s also an inaugural Spa Package for Rs 24,999 — including a one-night stay for a couple in the hotel, meals,a welcome amenity and a three-hour royal spa treatment.

The meals here are a healthy mix of fresh and non-greasy wholesome fare designed by Executive Chef Pallav Singhal.

Now,all you need is free time. A prior appointment is advisable as the guest frequency is high, specially in the later part of the day.
