Panjab University Dean Students Welfare Naval Kishore Sharma today held a meeting with university officials regarding the issue of charging increased fee from students. PU officials, meanwhile, said a miscommunication between the Vice-Chancellor’s office and the examination branch led to the faux pas.

Circulars had been sent to various departments by the examination branch, intimating students about the fee hike. The authorities, however, said this was the result of some miscommunication.

Various departments including the University Institute of Engineering Technology,Department of Laws and Police Administration had received circulars a few days ago, informing them about the revised fee. This had also led to agitation among students, but they ended up paying the hiked fee.

Dean Students Welfare Professor Naval Kishore said: “There has been a miscommunication as we have not increased the fee. Recently, many wrong circulars were sent and we are trying to pin down the person responsible for this.”

While PU authorities said that there has been no increase in some and a nominal increase in a few departments, officials of the examination branch said they had passed whatever information they had received from the V-C’s office.

Professor A K Bhandhari,Controller Examination, said: “There has been a communication gap between the two departments. We communicated whatever we received from the V-C’s office. Some changes were made later but were not communicated to us. This created a problem, but we are now looking into the matter and things will soon be settled.”

Sources, meanwhile, maintain that there has been a deliberate miscommunication. It is also being alleged that former Deputy Registrar A S Randhawa is responsible for the entire matter.

Refuting the allegations, however,Randhawa said: “I did what I was told to do. It is a mistake on part of both the departments. The details will be available with the examination controller.”

The final decision on the matter will be decided tomorrow.

INSO threatens stir
In a move against the increased fee hike in certain departments of the Panjab University,Indian National Students’ Organisation (INSO) will submit a memorandum, demanding that the hike be called off. Sukhdev Kundu,INSO president,Panjab University unit, said that this move, apart from putting extra burden on students, has broken their faith in the authorities. Kundu said: “It seems that the authorities have not set their priorities in order, whether to support the academic infrastructure or to construct a Rose Garden in front of the V-C’s office, when students, who are regularly being burdened by fee hikes, are living in pathetic conditions in university hostels. They face problems like unhygienic food, sanitation,no properly working internet facility and others.” The fee in the Department of Computer Science and Application was increased from 1,200 Rs to Rs 1,760; in UILS from Rs 520 to Rs 1,140,which means a hike by 47 per cent and 120 per cent, respectively.
