February 2012 was coldest in five years

This February was the coldest in the last five years. As per data of the Met Department,the mean maximum temperature in February this year was 21.1 degrees.

This February was the coldest in the last five years. As per data of the Met Department,the mean maximum temperature in February this year was 21.1 degrees. This is the lowest in the past half decade. Last year,the mean maximum temperature was 22.2 degrees,in 2010 it was 23.4 degrees while in 2009 it was 24.9 degrees.

The night temperature was also less than that of the previous years. The minimum mean temperature was recorded as 8.7 degrees this year. In 2011 and 2010 it was 10.5 and 10.2 respectively. Even in 2009,the mean minimum temperature in February was 11.3 which was more than this year.

In terms of rainfall,January 2012 was wetter than usual. During the first month of this year,Chandigarh witnessed the maximum rainfall of 47.4 mm,which is the highest in the last five years in January. This is far more than the rainfall of 5.3 mm in 2011 and 7 mm in 2009. The maximum rainfall recorded in February this year was 2.8 mm on February 5 which is slightly lesser than 2.2 mm in February 2008. While 164.7 mm rainfall was the highest in the last five years which was in 2007.

Surinder Paul,director of the meteorological department,said that the western disturbances are one of the reasons that February was colder than last few years.
