Chandigarh: Families of dead sewer cleaners to get Rs 10 lakh

The UT administration on Thursday issued a notification regarding the release of compensation of Rs 10 lakh to the family members of sewer workers who died after inhaling toxic gases while cleaning manholes and septic tanks recently.

Chandigarh Mayor Arun Sood said the administration has released the remaining amount of Rs 8 lakh each to the families of the three deceased workers.

Soon after the incident, the administration had released Rs 2 lakh compensation, following which the association had demanded Rs 10 lakh according to the Supreme Court judgment.

The mayor also assured that the sewer workers, who died in Sector 40 recently, will also be given the compensation.

“Keeping in view the safety of labourers and sewer workers, the municipal corporation will provide proper masks and cylinders and other necessary equipment required during the cleaning of sewerage manholes by the next few days,” said the Mayor.
