Facebook helps traffic cops nab 1,600 violators

Since its inception,some five months ago,the Facebook page of the Chandigarh Traffic Police has proved to quite helpful in nabbing traffic offenders.

Since its inception,some five months ago,the Facebook page of the Chandigarh Traffic Police has proved to quite helpful in nabbing traffic offenders. The police have issued over 1,600 challans to violators through public information posted on the its Facebook page.

The page was initially started by the police in order to facilitate public interaction and public participation,but has also proved beneficial in nabbing traffic offenders. People have started posting pictures and information of those flouting traffic norms. The traffic police also took note and started issuing Traffic Violation Information Slip (TVIS) to the offenders.

Speaking to Newsline,Vijay Kumar,Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP Traffic) said,“We have been successful in increasing public participation in our activities through Facebook. Through public support we are ensuring proper enforcement of traffic rules and laws.”

He added that the department issues a Traffic Violation Information Slip after someone posts genuine evidence showing that a violation has been made.

“The person posting the information has to make sure the he mentions the place of the traffic offence,time,date and the clear registration number of the vehicle. Once we establish that the picture is genuine,we issue a TVIS. Offenders can pay the fee for the challans at e-sampark centres or by visiting our website,” said Kumar.
