A discussion on the most suitable technology that is required for setting up the Sewerage Treatment Plant was held at the Municipal Corporation. A proposal had been mooted in the meeting of the General House held last month for setting up an STP. However, with differences arising over the technology of the plant, the decision was referred to a committee.
It was proposed that a group of councillors could visit STPs in different states where these were installed in order to judge the technology. In the meeting held on Thursday,it was decided that technical experts should guide the councillors on the technology. If the need arises, they would visit the plants.
The members of the committee decided that a meeting with the consultants would be held. The consultant who had prepared the detailed project report for the proposed plant would also be called for a hearing. The pros and cons of the technologies that are available would be weighed. Thereafter the best technology available would be selected.
The officials of the civic body have been asked to prepare a list of the STPs and where these are located. It was also decided that the technical experts who are available in the city would be consulted. Expertise would be sought from the Punjab Engineering College as well as officials from the department of environment.
Deputy Mayor Satish Kainth says that councillors were not an expert about sewerage technology and needed to be guided by experts. He added that then they would decide on the future course of action.
There are some STPs already present in the city. When a proposal was mooted for a new one, questions were raised about the need for another plant as well as the proposed technology. After a debate ensued on the issue it was decided that a perusal of the technologies would be done before a final decision is taken.
