The leaders of the Chandigarh unit of Congress raised several demands when the Union Minister for Road Transport and Highway,Oscar Fernandes,met them at Congress Bhawan,Sector 35. It was stressed that the orders for these should be issued directly by the Ministry of Home Affairs so that these do not get stuck in red tape.
Mayor Subhash Chawla stated that the need-based changes being demanded by members of the Chandigarh Housing Board Federation be agreed to. The members of the federation have been raising their demands for some time. Another issue raised was that the houses constructed outside lal dora be regularised as a one-time measure. It was also demanded that by 2014,the rehabilitation of all slum dwellers be completed. Regularisation of daily wagers was also demanded.
The Congress leaders expressed their support to local MP Pawan Kumar Bansal who recently had to resign from the post of Railways Minister after the rail bribery scam involving his nephew came to light. The leaders demanded that he be re-inducted into the Cabinet.
Fernandes came to the city after visiting Uttarakhand. He said that assessing the extent of damage is a little difficult at this time. There is widespread damage. There is a need to join hands and console people in this hour of need, he said.
He assured that all the issues that were raised by the local leaders would be looked into. He said that regularisation of colonies,etc was done in Delhi as well and could be done here.
Talking about Pawan Kumar Bansal,he said that once he knows what the chargesheet by CBI contains,the future course of action will be ascertained.
