Twenty-one-year-old Tibetan Dolma Bhutti today finally successfully underwent kidney transplant at the Post Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER). According to officials, she was taken into the operation theatre at about 10 am and her surgery continued till about 1:45 in the afternoon, lasting over three and a half hour.
Officials said that as per the procedure, she will kept at the hospital for post-surgery care for at least a week to avoid any infection etc. Doctors said that she was doing fine after the transplant and the functioning of her vital organs are being monitored.
It must be mentioned that Dolma Bhutti could be operated upon for kidney transplant nearly two months after the Punjab and Haryana High Court ordered that no delay be caused in the surgery. Both Dolma and her donor,Buddhist monk Nawang Choeden, were admitted to the PGI on Wednesday.
The lone hurdle in the kidney transplant of the Tibetan was cleared last week after her tissues had matched with those of the donor,Nawang Choeden.
Twenty-one-year-old Bhutti had moved the Court seeking directions to PGI to immediately perform her kidney transplant surgery. The PGI authorities had expressed helplessness in performing the operation, stating that the surgery could not be performed until the Himachal government and the Tibet Association gave their nod.
Finally, after the High Courts intervention, the Himachal government and Tibet Association had given their nod for the surgery.
