As many as 17 long route buses of Chandigarh Transport Undertaking remained off the road today owing to diesel shortage.
Later in the day, fuel was supplied to the four depots through tankers. Officials claim that enough supply has been provided to ply buses for a week.
However, the additional funds required for the fuel are yet to be approved by the Administration.
There are more than 500 Chandigarh Transport Undertaking buses which run locally and on the long route. Chandigarh Transport Undertaking depots were left with diesel supply for just two days with the average consumption per day being more than 28,000 litres.
State CTU officials said that the budget approved for fuel this financial year was less than the previous year. The additional funds asked for were not approved. Due to this there was a shortage of funds. The funds have not been approved till now. However, with fuel now being made available it is expected that the long route buses would start plying from Wednesday.
Chandigarh Transport Undertaking Director TPS Phulka said that tankers of fuel were called in and supplies made to the depots. There is adequate supply for one week. In the meantime, additional funds for fuel would also be sanctioned. He added that there was no disruption of buses on local routes.
