Up in arms against the UT Administration and Chandigarh Municipal Corporation, the car dealers of the Chandigarh Car Dealers Association on Sunday protested against the lack of proper infrastructure and basic amenities at the Hallomajra car bazar. The president of the Car Dealers Association, Gulshan Kumar, said, “There is no proper infrastructure and the ground here smells and is full of dirt. No one can stand here for more than a few seconds. Moreover, the public toilet made by the MC for the convenience of car dealers and customers lacks facilities such as water and taps.”

It was also alleged that there was no facility of drinking water in the area and car dealers had to bring their own water . “There are no customers at all because we have been shifted out of the city. How would we make our living?” asked Gulshan.

While agitating, the car dealers alleged that MC had given 20 feet of space to every car dealer to display their cars wherein a dealer can park only 10 cars, and the charge for the space is around Rs 7,100 which they claim is on the higher side. The dealers said that if the administration did not listen to their demands, they would intensify their protest. Meanwhile, the Chandigarh Municipal Corporation has yet again decided to auction all 51 sites of the Hallomajra car bazar. The auction will be held on November 15.

It is the second time in the year when the auction would be held here. In January, the auction was held but because no car dealer turned up, all efforts went in vain. After the Punjab and Haryana High Court orders, the car dealers who were directed to hold the car bazar at Hallomajra were being issued slips by the Municipal Corporation every Sunday. The car bazaar is held every Sunday.

The reserve price of as many as 50 sites with a capacity of 10 cars has been kept as Rs 3 lakh. According to the Municipal Corporation, the earnest money which has to be deposited for this would be Rs 50,000. There is one site with a capacity of 12 cars, the reserve price of which has been kept at Rs 3.60 lakh. The earnest money for this site as well is Rs 50,000. Applications have been invited till October 27 at the office of Municipal Corporation. The car dealers said that they wouldn’t participate in the auction until the Municipal Corporation provides facilities at Hallomajra.
