A day after garbage was thrown in front of the residence of the senior deputy mayor,the officials of the Municipal Corporation on Monday bowed to the agitating garbage collectors and accepted their demands.
Heaps of garbage,overflowing bins dotted various sectors in the absence of no garbage collectors. Residents of the city had thrown garbage alongside the main roads at certain places in sectors 38,40,41 and 45.
Later in the evening,the MC officials gave in to the demands of the employees who had been staging protest for the past 15 days over the recently launched pilot project of the MC to collect garbage from door to door using a special van.
Mayor Raj Bala Malik,MC Commissioner Vivek Pratap Singh and area councillor held a meeting with the agitating garbage collectors as per the decision taken at the Finance and Contract Committee meeting of the Municipal Corporation held recently.
During the meeting,it was decided that the garbage collectors in Sector 22 would collect municipal solid waste as in the past. The Municipal Corporation would not deploy its contractual door-to-door collectors and provide transportation as earlier. The door-to-door collectors would collect payments from the residents as earlier,and the Municipal Corporation would not collect it from the residents of Sector 22.
As far as commercial areas of Sector 22 are concerned,the new system adopted in the pilot project will continue to be implemented.
After the meeting,the protesting garbage collectors welcomed the move of the Municipal Corporation authorities and assured full co-operation in new initiatives and unhindered work in the area.
