The issue of construction of a day market at Mauli Jagran is likely to cause heated discussions in the MC House on Wednesday, with both the BJP and Congress ready to cross swords on the issue. The Congress during the last meeting of the general house had proposed that the construction of the market be scrapped. This was opposed by the BJP. An agenda for the same is being brought to the MC House.
The construction of the market is already going on. The agenda was approved in the previous term of the MC. Interestingly,at that time there were 15 Congress councillors in the House and the party was in majority. Clearance of the plan was also received from the office of the Chief Architect.
The Congress has opposed the construction claiming that the number of vendors that would be accommodated is less than what are present in the area. It is being stated that it would be unsafe to construct the market as the fire safety norms would not be followed. This is being opposed by the BJP. With the area councillor at Mauli Jagran being a BJP leader,a letter has been written by her to all nominated councillors and other non-Congress councillors not to support the agenda for cancellation of construction.
The BJP is taking the plea that there is no provision in the Municipal Act for cancelling the work that has been approved in the previous tenure of the MC. The party claims that it would set a wrong precedent. Both the parties in meetings held on Tuesday made preparations for arguments on the agenda as it would be placed in the House on Wednesday.
