A government school in Kurala on the Chandigarh-Patiala highway,on Monday catered to “dancing and entertainment lessons” as the school premises were let out for the wedding of an influential political leader of the village. The drama, which left the students high and dry,was allegedly carried out on the insistence of the village sarpanch.

As dancers enthralled the wedding guests from a tent, erected on the premises, liquor was also being openly served with school students witnessing the shameful affair during school hours.

School headmistress Anita Goel, who had reportedly taken a leave today, said that while she was initially unaware of the marriage ceremony, she later discovered that the village sarpanch had forced his way into the school premises. The sarpanch, said Goel, cited bad weather as the reason for holding the function on the school premises.

Director Public Instructions (Schools),secondary,Harcharanjit Kaur Brar assured of marking an enquiry into the incident.

“Such functions are not allowed within the school premises and those responsible will not be spared.”

Brar added that if the sarpanch forced his way into the school, the department would not hesitate in even writing to the government for initiating action against him.

While government rules prohibit serving of liquor inside the school, they also proscribe the holding of such functions on the campus during school timing.
