Cylinder blast claims two lives,injures 6

Two people were killed and six were injured after an LPG cylinder caught fire at a science instrument manufacturing unit in Khojkipur village.

Two people were killed and six were injured after an LPG cylinder caught fire at a science instrument manufacturing unit in Khojkipur village near here on Thursday. The impact of the incident was such that the roof of the building was totally damaged and eight workers were buried under the debris. However,three of them were rescued immediately and were rushed to a private hospital with burn injuries. The blast occurred around 10.00 am and rescue operations continued till 4 pm.

Ambala-Panchkula police commissioner Rajbir Deswal immediately reached the spot and took stock of the rescue operation. Six people were rescued by police personnel assisted by the local people. Later,ITBP personnel were called in who dug out two bodies identified as those of Mandip and Anil Kumar from the debris. Three of the 6 injured —Rajpal,Rajesh and Gurjit— were referred to the PGI Chandigarh in critical condition. The other three Jagtar,Ricky and Pardeep were admitted to the hospital here.

Factory owner Arvind Rana said that the incident was an accidental. He said that loss suffered in the blast was in lakhs because the machinery and scientific instruments and goods manufactured in the factory all perished in the fire. DCP Vinod Kaushik and the SDM also reached the site. Local MLA Anil Vij who also visited the site demanded a compensation from the government.

Meanwhile,deputy commissioner K Makrand Pandurang ordered an enquiry by the DSM Vinay Pratap Singh within 30 days. He said that EO had been asked to look into the facts whether the factory owners took all the precautionary measured or the incident took place due to negligence.
