In yet another hit-and run case on city roads,a cyclist was killed after she was crushed by a truck on Thursday morning. The deceased identified as Usha was in her early forties. She was a resident of New Indra Colony,Manimajra and employed at a factory in Industrial Area,Chandigarh.
According to Investigating Officer,Sub-Inspector Balbir Singh,the incident took place around 8 am when Usha was headed for work on her cycle. She reached the Transport Light Point from the Bapu Dham side where the accident took place.
Usha and the truck were coming from the same side. While Usha had to go straight towards Industrial Area,the truck driver had to turn left on the slip road. The truck driver did not take the slip road and instead reached the Light point. He then suddenly turned towards Manimajra and in the process crushed Usha under the back wheels of the truck, said Singh.
The victim received severe head injuries and was rushed to PGIMER by a Police Control Room Vehicle where the doctors declared her dead on arrival. She is survived by her husband,a carpenter by profession and a four children.
Meanwhile,the truck driver fled from the spot. He was chased by a PCR vehicle which found the truck abandoned on the road leading to IT Park near the Railway Light point. The driver is yet to be arrested. Police have registered a case of causing death due to negligence at the Sector 26 police station against the truck driver.
Around 51 people have been killed in road accidents so far this year. The majority of victims have been cyclist and pedestrians. While 13 cyclist have been killed so far,15 pedestrians have also lost their lives on city roads. Over a 100 people have been injured in these accidents.
