A 20-year-old youth of Kailon village was killed by his cousin and his body thrown into a canal near Fatehgarh Sahib on January 20,the police said on Saturday.

Station House Officer (SHO) Sub-Inspector Dalbeer Singh told Newsline that Gurwinder Singh alias Guri of Ferozepur village has confessed to the murder of his step aunt’s son,Harpreet Singh, following his arrest on Saturday.

The SHO,who is the investigation officer in the case, said Harpreet’s parents own around 10 acres of prime land worth Rs 25 crore and he had recently joined his father’s farming business. Guri and Harpreet lived in a joint family.

On January 20,Guri took Harpreet for a drive on his motorcycle. They allegedly bought liquor on way before halting on the Sirhind Canal near Ferozepur village, the SHO said on the basis of preliminary investigation.

Guri has reportedly told the police that after Harpreet got intoxicated,he hit him on his head with a beer bottle and threw his body into the canal.

The SHO said Guri admitted that since Harpreet was the only son of his parents, who owned valuable property,he planned to kill him with a hope that the assets would be transferred to his name after Harpreet’s death.

Following Guri’s arrest, the police have launched a search to fish out Harpreet’s body from the canal.

On Friday,Harpreet’s father Paramjeet had told the police that his son had left home on January 20 and had not returned since then. The family had reportedly been making frantic efforts to search him and decided to report the matter to the police after Harpreet’s cousin Jagwant Singh said he had last seen him riding pillion on a motorcycle with Guri on January 20.

Paramjeet accused Guri of murder and abduction in his complaint, following which the Kharar police had on Friday lodged a case under Sections 364,302 and 201 of the IPC.
