A local court on Thursday convicted the husband of Monica Goyal,whose body was found hanging at her Sector 21 residence on October 15 last year,of abetment to suicide.
However,the court acquitted him and his parents of murder charge. Quantum of sentence will be pronounced on Friday.
Vikas Goyal,33,husband of the victim,was also convicted along with his parents Gyan Parkash,67,and Prem Lata,63,under Section 201 (causing disappearance of evidence of offence,or giving false information to screen offender) of the Indian Penal code.
The court acquitted the brother-in-law of the deceased,Vishal Goyal,31,who was one of the accused in the case,of all the charges.
On October 15,Monikas body was allegedly found hanging at her Sector 21 residence. According to her in-laws,her husband Vikas Goyal was the first to spot her body hanging.
While the deceaseds husband and family claimed that she committed suicide,Monikas parents alleged that Monika was murdered.
A Special Investigation Team was constituted after the parents of the deceased approached the city Senior Superintendent of Police on October 31,2012.
A charge of murder under Section 302 of the Indian Penal Code apart from abetment to suicide under Section 306 of the Indian Penal Code was added to the FIR by the Chandigarh Police following investigations.
Talking to Newsline,Bhagwan Das,father of the deceased,said,We will appeal in the higher court. We are not satisfied with the judgment.
A total of 23 prosecution witnesses were examined in the case that included investigating officers and CFSL experts.
One of the prosecution witnesses,the doctor,who first examined Monika,told the court on August 9 that she should have been rushed to the hospital immediately to improve her chances of survival. However,she was allegedly taken to the hospital after an hour.
Monika was a computer teacher and left behind an eight-year-old son who is now living with his maternal grandparents.
