Deputy Chief Minister and Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) president Sukhbir Singh Badal claimed that the Congress will be wiped out in the upcoming Municipal Council and Corporation elections and in the 2014 Lok Sabha elections.

Badal was in the city on Friday where Gurteg Singh Gill, former senior Congress leader and a one time close aide of Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee chairperson Captain Amarinder Singh, joined SAD (Badal).

“There is an anti-Congress wave that has been sweeping the nation. Punjab Vidhan Sabha elections have proved it and the municipal council and corporation elections will further prove this when the Congress will be unable to touch the double digit mark,” he said.

Commenting on the statement issued by Amarinder Singh on papers of Congress candidates being ‘forcibly’ cancelled,Sukhbir said,“Captain has been doing all this just to retain his post in the party. SAD has not been bull dozing any Congress leader.”

Welcoming Gill, his son Harkirat Singh Gill, and local councillor Gurcharan Singh into the party, the deputy CM said,“Gill had helped me when I had begun my career. His return, due to the efforts of MP Harsimrat Kaur Badal, will strenghthen the party.”

On the issue of appointing heads and chairperson for various corporation and boards,Sukhbir said,“It will be decided after the election code of conduct ends in the state. Appointments will done on the basis of merit to ensure that the boards work smoothly and efficiently.”
