Soon, there would be an end to queues and queries at the UT Estate Office. For,the information pertaining to all the files, building plans, submitted to the Estate Office will be sent to general public through SMS on their mobile phones.

For the purpose, the National Informatics Centre,Chandigarh, has even held a training session of the staff of the Estate Office. A specialised software would also be used by the Estate Office which would enable the staff to know the status of a specific file, case, building plan, and the same status information would be passed on to the residents on their mobile numbers.

As per sources, the move comes after recently the contract between the HDFC Bank and the UT Estate Office was terminated. For the last seven years, the bank has been providing the services to EO with regard to payments and dues by the residents. Further, the bank utilising the services of a software company was even entrusted with the responsibility of computerising all the records of the UT Estate Office.

“The contract with the bank and the software company has been terminated. We are training our own staff now as they understand the work and files much better, and even we will have more accountability and efficiency of work,” said a senior official of the UT Estate Office.

However, insiders claim that the computerisation of records could not be completed in these seven years. In fact, before this software company, even the UT Administration’s Society for Promotion of Information Technology in Chandigarh (SPIC) was given the task of computerisation of records for a whopping Rs 25-30 lakh. But even SPIC failed to complete the task.

Significantly, the UT Administration has similar proposals for other departments as well. In fact,a common services gateway would soon be launched by the IT department in all the departments wherein the residents do not have to physically go to any office for any work as all the forms and documents would be available online. Through emails and SMS services, they will be informed about the status of their works and applications. Even all the payments would be made online under this facility.
