A clash between the Panjab University Students Union (PUSU) and Students Organisation of Panjab university (SOPU) at DAV College (Sector 10) today left seven students injured,with two sustaining bullet injuries. According to the police,the members of the college student council (PUSU) were preparing for a star night to be held in the campus on Tuesday. They were attacked with pistols and sharp weapons at 5 pm today. The miscreants fired gunshots.
Two members Jeevanjot Chahal alias Jugnu and Charandev Singh sustained bullet injuries. Chahal got a bullet injury in his stomach while Charandev was injured in his stomach. Five other students sustained injuries inflicted by sharp-edged weapons, said a police official. Both Charandev,a student of Chandigarh Engineering College (CEC) Landran,and Jeevanjot,DAV College student,were rushed to Government Multi-Speciality Hospital,Sector 16. The other five students were identified as Navdeep,Arshdeep and Paramdeep,Ankit and Satpal.
They are currently admitted at PGI,Sector 12. Of these,Navdeep,Arshdeep are from CEC,Paramdeep from DAV college,while Ankit and Satpal were outsiders. As per the police officials,Charandev was designated the college president this morning. He entered into a verbal spat with SOPU representative Amandeep Singh Multani. Multani had threatened Charandev that he would disrupt the preparations for star night.
The college authorities,however,are claiming that none of the college students have sustained injuries. When contacted,DAV College Principal Ashok Nanda said,All the boys who have been injured were outsiders. Nobody from our college has received any injuries. The incident took place when the student council members (SOPU) were preparing for Tuesdays star night. They were attacked by a few outsiders. We may have to cancel the star night. The decision will be taken on Tuesday, added Nanda.
PUSU President in DAV College Sukhjit Singh alleged that the attackers included SOPU representatives Lawrence Bishnoi,Amandeep Singh Multani,Robin Brar (PUCSC President),Vicky Midhukhera and Rashpal Singh other SOPU leaders. Preliminary investigations show that there were eight rounds of firing. The attackers are habitual offenders. We have recorded the statements of the eyewitnesses and identified the miscreants. We hope to arrest them by late tonight, said an official. A case of attempt to murder and criminal conspiracy has been registered against nearly 20 students at the Sector 3 police station.
