The Municipal Corporation is likely to get a fresh survey conducted of the commercial property in the city in order to ensure that tax is levied on all buildings. The members of the House Tax Committee had raised the demand for the survey to be conducted instead of increasing the amount of property tax that is being imposed.
A survey of the commercial properties was conducted eight years ago by PEC,however, officials claim that there were discrepancies in the survey. Due to this the survey will be conducted again. In fact Municipal Corporation had also withheld the payment to the institute for the survey.
The need for conducting a fresh survey was raised by the councillors after repeated letters from the Centre and reminders from the UT Administration for imposing tax on residential property and increasing the tax imposed on commercial property. The councillors stated that if a proper survey was conducted and tax collected from all existing buildings then tax collection would increase without the need to increase tax.
Chairman of the House Tax committee Sat Prakash Aggarwal stated that while they had asked the officials for a fresh survey to be conducted, this has not been started till now. A meeting of the House Tax committee is scheduled for Friday wherein the officials would be asked about the survey. It is essential that property tax be collected from all the properties. There are gaps in collection that need to be filled up. This would negate the need for increasing the tax on commercial properties, he said.
The traders from the city had met the Mayor recently asking that the tax on commercial property not be increased. They had stated that the traders in the city are already paying a number of taxes and this would add to their burden.
Municipal Corporation building to get more office space?
Facing a shortage of space for offices, the Municipal Corporation building will soon see the construction of three additional storeys. Estimates for the construction have been prepared and the agenda will be included in the forthcoming meeting of the General House. Once the estimates are approved, tenders will be invited to start construction.
The construction plans for the building are in the final stages of completion. Apart from new offices, the building will also get an assembly hall to hold monthly meetings of the General House.
It has also been proposed that instead of having MC offices in different sectors, all the officials should come under one roof once the construction has been completed.
In addition to a shortage of space, there were a number of violations present in the existing building of the civic body. Rooms were constructed in the basement which are being used to park cars while two-wheelers are being parked in front of the offices. There is lack of ventilation or adherence to fire safety norms.
While the proposal had been doing the rounds for the past many years, execution could not be done due to the building plans going missing. Survey was then conducted by the National Institute for Technical Teachers Training and Research. By scanning the columns and pillars, the strength of the existing buildings was gauged, based in which the new plans are being drawn up.
