Following the Municipal Corporation (MC) demolishing the boundary wall of the girls’ hostel of DAV College, the students and college staff disrupted traffic on the main Jalandhar-Amritsar Road for over two hours on Wednesday. The MC had razed the wall on the ground that it was an illegal construction.

The college authorities, however, alleged that MC demolished the wall at the behest of land mafia and to help a SAD leader, who has come up with a residential colony near the college. The leader needed the wall to be demolished to make way for a road to the colony, the college authorities alleged.

Principal B B Sharma, who also took part in the protest, said that the wall was raised in 1974. He added that a few years ago,the MC,while laying down sewage pipes on the road adjoining the wall, had sought permission from the college to demolish the wall. The wall was demolised, following which the MC had constructed it again at its own expense. “If it was an encroachment, why did they construct the wall at that time?” he asked. Sharma claimed that the MC has no right over this land as the adjoining road belonged to the irrigation department.

Asked whether the MC had issued any notice regarding the wall,Sharma said: “The MC had issued a notice in December, last year. I had replied to it but there was no further communication from their side.”

MC Commissioner B S Dhaliwal could not be contacted despite repeated attempts.
