Putting an end to the controversy over organisation of the Rose Festival, the Municipal Corporation,on Thursday, constituted a committee headed by the Mayor that would oversee the preparations. Councillors have been made part of the 13 sub-committees that have been constituted for various events. An amount of Rs 34 lakh was approved for meeting the expenditure of the Rose Festival.
A meeting of the members of the Finance and Contract Committee was also held on Thursday. The members decided that to constitute a committee to be headed by the Mayor and would comprise the Municipal Commissioner, two Additional Commissioners, the Chief Engineer and the area councillor. The decisions for the Rose Festival will be approved by the committee.
The MC has also asked for a grant of Rs 20 lakh from the UT Administration for the festival, which has been approved by the Ministry of Tourism. This is the first time that the Rose Festival will be organised by the civic body. Earlier the UT Administration,in collaboration with different departments, used to organise the festival.
The events will be managed by sub-committees. One councillor each will be a member of the 13 sub-committees. Some councillors will also be made members of the judges panel for the events. It was further pointed out that the officers of the Municipal Corporation rather than the Administration should be given charge of the events.
The Rose Festival will be organised from February 24 to 26. While the Administration will be organising events at the Leisure Valley, the main function is to be looked after by the MC as the Rose Garden has been transferred to the civic body. While it had been proposed that the Municipal Corporation look for sponsors for the events, this was ruled out.
Apart from the events that are organised annually, this year new events were proposed to be added. These include Miss and Mr Rose contest and Flower Hat contest.
