Doc awarded
for treating rare heart disease

In a rarest of the rare cases,an 18-year-old patient who was diagnosed with Ehlers Danlos Syndrome Type IV,a rare heart disease, underwent a successful endovascular repair of the abnormal vessel enlargements with six covered graft stents deployed at multiple sites.

The case has won a young PGI cardiologist,Assistant Professor Dr Shiv Bagga, third prize in the CD presentation award session at the recently concluded National Interventional Council (NIC) meeting in Kochi,Kerala. Dr Bagga won the award after qualifying through a stiff semi-final which had 70 best cases selected from all across the country. The award includes a three-month interventional cardiology fellowship training at one of the apex institutes in Asia Pacific or Europe.

“The biggest dilemma in this case was to find the causes for the disease,as this has been very rarely reported in the medical literature,” said Dr Bagga. “Now the patient is doing fine after two months of follow-up post-procedure.”
