Blame it on increasing insecurity or high stress, the city has witnessed as many as 251 suicides in the past three years. An alarming fact is that more than half (50.99 per cent) of the people committing suicides fall in the 15-29 years age category. Significantly,57.8 percent in this group are females.

According to police figures, out of the 2521 suicides,132 were males. While males in the age group of 30-49 are committing more suicides,in females the age group for the high number of suicides is in the 15-29 age group. In the past three years,128 suicide cases belong to 15-29 years age group. Over the years this group has seen an increase with 2009,2010 and 2011 seeing 34,39 and 55 suicides.

Experts point out that the general global trend witnessed more number of women attempting suicide, but overall the number of males who have died are more. Dr B S Chavan, head of Psychiatric Department,GMCH-32,said,“As compared to women, men use more lethal ways when they commit suicide. Another reason behind suicides is related to associated substance abuse which generally starts at an early age,but which can be one reason for high male suicides.” He added that as a whole, women were more prone to depression which is why there were more women committing suicides at a younger age.

Dr Simi Waraich. head of Psychiatric Department at Fortis Hospital, said,“When it comes to females, attempting suicide is a cry for help. This can be a result of a personality disorder or just sudden mood swings.”
