BJP city unit team meets Naidu

Chandigarh: A delegation of Chandigarh unit of the BJP met Venkaiah Naidu,chairman,Standing Committee of Home Affairs,with regard to the problems faced by the industries as well as the residents of houses made by the Chandigarh Housing Board. The delegation briefed Naidu about the problems and the meeting conducted by the Joint Secretary. The main issues highlighted by the delegation were non-implementation of MSMED Act in Chandigarh in letter and spirit,non-conversion of industrial plots from lease hold property to free hold property,and non-existence of industrial policy from the Chandigarh Administration. It was stated that residents of CHB are running from pillar to post for getting their property transferred in their names. Naidu spoke to the Secretary to address these issues in the next meeting of the Standing Committee.

Fugitive sent to police remand

MOHALI: Amandeep Singh Dhami,a fugitive wanted by the FBI in the United States in connection with a murder case dating back to 2008,was on Friday produced in a Mohali court and was sent to four more days of police remand. Dhami was recently arrested by the State Crime Branch of Punjab Police after being on the run for over five years. He was booked for living under a false name in Jalandhar. In August 2008,Dhami,28,reportedly open fired at a sports event in Sacramento County in California,in which one Paramjit Singh Pamma,26,died while several others were injured.

Six injured as two cars collide

MOHALI: Six people suffered injuries when the cars they were travelling in collided with each other near Sector 70-71 light point in Mohali on Friday. The injured have been identified as Gurinder Singh,Dharminder Singh,Gurvinder Singh,Ranjit Singh,Nirbhay Singh and Harinder Singh,all residents of Mohali. All six are at present admitted to Civil Hospital,Phase 6. A case will be registered only if both the parties fail to reach a compromise,police said.

Man gets 7 yrs in jail for rape

CHANDIGARH: A local court on Friday sentenced a man to seven years’ imprisonment for raping a Class X student. While awarding the sentence the Court of Additional District and Sessions Judge Shalini S Nagpal also imposed a fine of Rs 5,000 on the guilty. The court had convicted him of rape on December 3. The mother of the victim,a resident of Khuda Alisher,filed a complaint on February 2 in which she alleged that the accused,Istakhar Ahmad,a resident of UP,raped her 17-year-old daughter a month ago and threatened her not to disclose it to anybody. A case was registered under Section 376,363 and 506 of the IPC. The court also awarded the guilty concurrent punishment of one year and three years and a fine of Rs 1,000 and Rs 3,000 for kidnap and criminal intimidation respectively.

Man held,13kg opium seized

Mohali: Mohali police on Friday arrested a man for allegedly possessing 13kg of opium. The accused has been identified as Barinder Kumar alias Billa,30,a resident of Khanpur village. Police said,the accused supplied drug locally after procuring it from Rajasthan through truck-drivers. The accused was nabbed at a police barricade near Mamupur petrol pump. A case has been registered against him for illegal possession of opium under Sections 18,61 and 85 of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act.
