Harmeet Singh single-handedly steered Chandigarh to a crushing 5-1 win over Delhi in their match in the men’s category of the 3rd Hockey India sub-junior national championship being played at Sonepat on Wednesday. Harmeet sounded the board on four occasions while Maninderjeet Singh also put his name among the scorers for the winning team.

Chandigarh hardly took time to settle down and,as expected, took the lead through Harmeet in as early as the sixth minute of the game. Buoyed by the goal, the Chandigarh forwards continued to make forays into the opposition half and as a result the Delhi defenders buckled under pressure and conceded another goal in the 14th minute. The scorer was Harmeet who got his second goal of the match. The Chandigarh forwards looked menacing in front of the goal and only some good work by the Delhi custodian prevented them from making further damage.

At the end of the half-time,the Chandigarh team was leading by 2-0. The Chandigarh team continued from where they had left by scoring their third goal through Harmeet in the 48th minute. While Harmeet completed his hattrick, the Delhi team gave a sorry figure of themselves on the pitch. Two minutes later,Maninderjeet also joined Harmeet and sounded the board in the 50th minute to make it 4-0. Barely 13 more minutes had passed, when Harmeet once again tormented the Delhi defenders and scored his fourth goal of the match and Chandigarh’s fifth.

Delhi players received a boost when Rahul pulled back one goal in the 68th minute. However, that goal came too late as the Chandigarh team kept their lead and registered an easy victory.

Meanwhile,in the women’s category, hosts Haryana crushed Uttarakhand,12-0,in a lop-sided encounter. It was a field day for the Haryana eves as they completely bamboozled the visiting team with their superb display. Navneet Kaur scored five goals. It was Devika Sen who opened the account for Haryana team in the fourth minute. Goals rained after that as Uttrakhand defenders had a torrid time in keeping the Haryana forwards at bay. Navneet scored two quick goals in a span of one minute to put the Uttrakhand team on the backfoot. Preeti also joined the party and netted her first goal and the team’s fourth in the 12th minute. Udita made it 5-0 with a spectecular effort in the 13th minute.
