Two days after going soft on violators, the Chandigarh Municipal Corporation on Saturday challaned 15 vehicles and imposed a fine of Rs 3,500 on four-wheelers that were wrongly parked in Sector 17. Facing criticism for backing out on their claims of not imposing the fine, the civic body challaned seven four-wheelers, five two-wheelers and three three-wheelers.
The State Transport Authority continued with its challans on wrong parking of vehicles and issued eight challans to violators. Congress chief Pardeep Chhabra said they would oppose this. “From where have they taken this rule and how can they issue such challans when they don’t have any power,” he said.
After facing opposition from the Congress and also within the BJP, the civic body did not issue any challans for wrong parking for the past two days. Two vehicles that were challaned on the first day were released after imposing a fine of Rs 1,000. After the term of the company running the multilevel parking ended on August 8, it was closed down by the municipal corporation. After being criticised for closing down of the Rs 47-crore
multilevel parking lot in Sector 17, the civic body declared that it would run the parking on its own now.
