UNIDENTIFIED MISCREANTS set ablaze two vehicles of a former professional footballer in Sector 21 in the early hours of Thursday. One of the vehicles was completely damaged. Police started an investigation after receiving a complaint. Kanwar Vinod, who is a former East Bengal player, resides in Sector 21-B along with his younger brother. He told Chandigarh Newsline that around 3.30 on Thursday morning, his neighbours woke him up after finding that his Scorpio and Tata Indigo cars were burning.
According to Vinod, when he came out of his house, the Scorpio was completely damaged while the Indigo was burning but with the help of his neighbours and family members, they managed to control the fire.
The former footballer said that after the incident, he talked to some of his neighbours and found that the miscreants were captured in the CCTV camera which was installed at a nearby house. Two youths were seen roaming near his house with their faces covered in the CCTV footage.
Vinod said that a watchman living in a nearby under-construction house told him that he saw two people park a bike outside the house where he was sleeping.
“The watchman said he saw two people going towards my house after parking the bike. Then he saw that both came back in a hurry and fled within seconds,” added Vinod.
The former footballer claimed the family did not have any enmity with anyone. The police started an inquiry after Vinod lodged a complaint at the Sector 19 police station.
Vinod is currently working with the Customs department while his younger brother, too, is a government employee. Vinod had played for East Bengal team and his son is playing for Mohun Bagan Club. Vinod runs Youngster’s Club in the city for promoting football.
