It will be a battle between a sitting councillor and the wife of a former councillor from ward 9 comprising Sectors 39 and 40. This ward was reserved for women during the last Municipal Corporation polls and interestingly, this time as well, in the draw of lots, the ward remains reserved for them.

Where the Congress is putting its faith on councillor Gurbax Rawat yet again, the Shiromani Akali Dal has fielded Inderjit Kaur Kang, the wife of former councillor and president of SAD Chandigarh unit, Jagjit Singh Kang. The BJP-SAD alliance has been kept this ward for their candidate.

Kang had fielded his wife from the same ward during the last MC polls as well, but she lost to Rawat with the lowest margin. The SAD-BJP candidate from ward 9, Inderjeet Kaur Kang had lost by only 148 votes.

During the last tenure, Rawat remained the most tech-savy councillor but residents feel that she remained inaccessible to them. Moreover, she also hogged the headlines for getting into a tiff with Mayor Arun Sood during the house meetings.

“In all these five years, Rawat could not arrange a playground for the children of our ward. The roads are in a bad shape and garbage can be seen stashed around. She claimed to get installed high mast lights but they remained non functional. Despite being a woman councillor, did she ever do anything for the safety of women. Parking has been such a problem here,” said Inderjit, adding, “Did she have regular meetings with the residents of the ward. She remained inaccessible.”

Rawat in her counter reply said, “A councillor is meant to do development works. Women safety has to be seen by the administration or the Member of Parliament. Regarding playgrounds, I feel this is the problem in entire Chandigarh.”
