Chandigarh Mayor says not invited to inauguration event in BJP councillor’s ward

ALL DOESN’T seem to be well in Chandigarh BJP unit after Mayor Asha Jaswal claimed that she did not get any invite for an inauguration in senior BJP leader and councillor Davesh Moudgil’s ward in Sector 47 on Sunday.

BJP councillor and former senior deputy mayor Davesh Moudgil had got the newly constructed Sehaj Safai Kendra (SSK) inaugurated in Sector 47 C and D by Municipal Corporation Commissioner Baldeo Purushartha. All others were there but the mayor remained conspicuous by her absence.

Talking to Chandigarh Newsline, Mayor Jaswal said, “I didnt get any intimation from Moudgil about the event on the phone. If he had sent a message, I don’t know about it. Moreover, I was also caught up in some work, so would not have been able to attend it.”

Moudgil, however, said that the mayor was supreme and when he is getting inauguration done by the Commissioner, he couldn’t have mentioned “in the presence of Mayor”.

“Mayor is the head of institution and is supreme. We couldn’t have mentioned inauguration by commissioner in presence of mayor. Also, it is a small and simple event. Mayor would inaugurate another such event independently in our ward, some other time,” he said.

This is the same event which was scheduled to be held two days back but was postponed because of certain reasons. It was then held today.

During the event, the commissioner also started the segregated waste collection scheme from the area through waste collectors, who have been provided double bins that is blue and green for collection of segregated waste from household level. He also distributed six-six dustbins and ID cards to the waste collectors of the area.

Earlier, the commissioner launched special cleanliness drive from Sector 22 market along with MC employees to mark ‘shramdaan’ under the “Swachhata hi Seva” programme. Similar cleanliness drives were organised in all the 26 wards of MC under the supervision of area councillors and officers of MC.

On the occasion, the commissioner said that the Municipal Corporation had distributed two dustbins to each and every household and ensuring segregation at source level that is household and commercial areas into biodegradable and non-biodegradable material. The biodegradable waste can be used for various purposes, including production of biogas, electricity and fertilizers.
