In a hurry to approve works ahead of the forthcoming elections, the civic body approved 11 table agenda items worth Rs 27 crore in a few minutes. This was much more than the cost of the items on the main agenda which was around Rs 6 crore. Although Senior Deputy Mayor Davesh Moudgil objected that such important agenda items which required discussion should have been sent a day before, the House went on to approve all of them. The table agenda is on-the-spot in nature and is usually prepared in emergencies while the main agenda is prepared well in advance and circulated among councillors.
“I also want development works to be carried out but not this way. From the very first day, I have been against the table agenda items. The table agenda items are presented only in two situations — one, when there is an emergency and two, when there is a policy matter. But these are simple agenda items which could have been sent a day before,” said Moudgil, adding that when such a huge amount of money is involved, it required a discussion.
In minutes, the civic body approved an estimate of Rs 13 crore for the work of augmentation of existing SWD (storm water drainage) system by providing additional SWD lines and construction of manhole and road gully chambers on V3 roads falling within the MC jurisdiction. Next in the line was the agenda of Rs 6 crore for providing sewerage and water connections in Deep Complex at Hallomajra which was approved immediately.
Within seconds, the councillors approved the dismantling of existing community centre and construction of a new one in Indira Colony at a cost of Rs 2.50 crore. “This is a wrong practice. They wanted to conceal some facts. That is why they tabled such issues worth crores and approved them in a hurry so that no other councillor gets time to think about those issues,” said Congress councillor Subhash Chawla.
