The Meteorological Department has predicted heavy rains between July 26 and 29 in Chandigarh and surrounding areas.
“We are anticipating heavy rainfall in the next 48 to 72 hours in Chandigarh and its surrounding areas,” said an official of the Met Department.
The rainfall so far is less than the records of last six years. Very little rainfall has been experienced this time.
On an average, the rainfall during monsoon in Chandigarh is 343mm per year. In last year, from June 1 to September 30, 287.7mm rainfall was recorded, 16 per cent less than the average rainfall during monsoon.
As per records, the rainfall in July 2010 was 406.5mm, in July 2011 was 214.4mm, in July 2012 was 275.1mm, in July 2013 was 214.5mm, in July 2014 was 155.4mm and in July 2015 was 275.9mm.Till date, the city has recorded 106.4mm rainfall.
In Punjab, Haryana and Himachal Pradesh, the rainfall is registering its presence as per the average. “We are hoping that rainfall in Chandigarh will cross the average record of July in next six days,” an official said.
