THE CHIEF Engineer of Greater Mohali Area Development Authority (GMADA), who is considered close to the senior SAD leadership, has been repatriated to Punjab Mandi Board (PMB), his parent department. The decision is said to have been taken after a high-level meeting of the GMADA authorities following some internal complaints against the officer. The decision has shocked many as Singh was looking after several dream projects of the Deputy Chief Minister.

Highly placed sources at GMADA told Chandigarh Newsline that Chief Engineer S P Singh was sent to the Punjab Mandi Board as a Senior Engineer on October 29, adding that the matter was brought under the consideration of Deputy CM Sukhbir Singh Badal.
“There were some issues and some verbal complaints were also made by senior officials against him. It was a surprise that the orders came suddenly on Saturday and it was also said that the officer should be relieved immediately. It is strange that an officer, who was considered close to many powerful politicians, is demoted in such a manner,” said a GMADA official.
The sources also revealed that some senior officials were not happy with Singh’s style of functioning and that he was in charge of many projects did not go down well with some GMADA officials. Singh, according to the sources, used to directly approach his seniors bypassing his immediate bosses. The questions were also raised in issuing tenders of some development works by GMADA in 2014.
Singh was looking after multiple projects undertaken by GMADA in Mohali and New Chandigarh. These included Medi-City, Eco-City and IT City in Mohali.
He was also under the scanner after some GMADA officials raised questions about his style of working. The projects, which were being carried out under his supervision, are worth over Rs 2,000 crore.
Singh, an employee of the PMB, joined GMADA in February this year. Earlier, he was holding multiple charges at PMB and his elevation as chief engineer was said to be a reward for his loyalty to the SAD leadership. Confirming the development, Housing Secretary Vishwajeet Khanna said Singh has been sent back to his parent department.
When contacted, Singh said it was a routine process and that he himself wanted to go back to his parent department as he had some health issues. He added that his tenure at GMADA would come to an end this December. “I am going on a six-month leave for my treatment. I do not want to comment on the allegations. It was only a routine transfer,” Singh further stated.
PMB Secretary Tejinder Pal Singh Sidhu said he was yet to receive the orders for Singh’s joining, adding that if the latter is repatriated, then he would join as an SE.
