Chandigarh: Gangrape accused auto driver held, hunt on for the second accused

On Saturday, police said that the accused identified as Waseem Malik has been arrested from the city. The second accused in the case is yet to be arrested.

The Chandigarh police have arrested an auto driver for the alleged gangrape of a 21-year-old student in Sector 29 earlier this week.On Monday, the victim, who also works at a call center in Sector 34 had hired an auto-rickshaw near the dividing road Sector 34 and 21. Other than the auto-rickshaw driver, the victim told the police that one more person was present in the auto.

The duo after allegedly raping the girl in a forest had set her free.

On Saturday, police said that the accused identified as Waseem Malik(35) has been arrested from the city. “He has confessed to the crime. We have not recovered the vehicle so far.

The second accused in the case is yet to be arrested. Further investigation in the case is going on and we are now trying to find out if he has committed such crimes earlier.”

Police said that accused is not married and was not in an inebriated condition while committing the crime.

“Only after interrogation, we will come to know about the the second accused and how the duo are related to each other” said Brar. The UT police had also announced a reward of Rs 50,000 for the person who would provide information about the second accused.

The police have also formed a seven-member team to arrest the accused.
