Chandigarh: Day after infant’s death, hospital denies negligence charges

A day after the death of a newborn, the authorities of a private hospital said the baby had many complications and died because of cardiac arrest. In a statement issued on Monday, Puneet Pundir, the administrator of Chaitanya Hospital, said: “The baby was in a sick state and was managed on ventilator, IV antibiotics, drugs for low BP, multiple blood and platelet transfusions and continued to be oxygen and ventilator- dependent. The baby had also developed secondary changes in heart due to severe sepsis and pneumonia. The condition of the baby remained very critical throughout the hospital stay.

The parents were being regularly updated about the baby’s illness and condition two times in a day and they wanted to continue treatment at our hospital.”

“On day 15 of the admission, the baby developed bleeding in lungs and severe heart failure. Despite all efforts, he succumbed to the illness. The baby’s death though unfortunate and tragic is in no way due to any negligence by any staff member of Chaitanya Hospital. In fact the baby was given the best possible care,” reads the statement.
