With Chief Justice Ranjan Gogoi of the Punjab and Haryana High Court getting elevated to the Supreme Court, speculation is on as to who will replace him. According to sources,Orissa’s Justice Bimal Prasad Das,who is to retire in November,is set to be the next chief justice of Punjab and Haryana High Court. A Delhi High Court judge is also on the list to replace Gogoi.

Dinner diplomacy

Haryana is without a chief secretary, thanks to the Bhupinder Singh Hooda government that wanted to bring back a favourite to the post. Initially,it was clear that the new chief secretary will join on the day Urvashi Gulati will be relieved of her duties as chief secretary. Accordingly, the farewell dinner was planned. But then as an anti-climax,there was a last minute hitch and the joining of the new chief secretary was deferred and so was the courtesy dinner for Gulati. It was decided that the dinner will be hosted as and when the new chief secretary joins — maybe on Tuesday — in Delhi.

All in family

With Haryana’s outgoing Chief Secretary Urvashi Gulati getting appointed as Haryana’s Information Commissioner, the State Information Commission becomes a ‘family affair’ for Gulati — while her husband Naresh Gulati is the chief information commissioner, her sister Meenaxi Anand Chaudhry is also an information commissioner. It is probably for the first time in the history of the Information Commission that three members of a family are being appointed as information commissioners post retirement.

Can & will publicise

It definitely pays to be heading a state department, particularly when you are considered to be a prominent member of the chief minister’s coterie. One such fit example is a senior IAS officer of Haryana — Financial Commissioner and Principal Secretary (Information and Public Relations) K K Khandelwal. Recently,Khandelwal had gone to Mansa Devi temple to pay obeisance on Navratras, along with his wife Dheera Khandelwal (another senior IAS officer of Haryana cadre) and other family members. His department wasted no time in displaying different photographs of the couple praying. Not only this, the entire Panchkula administration, including Deputy Commissioner Ashima Brar and other senior officers also made it a point to be present on the occasion and posed for pictures.

Taking potshots

Though former Congress MLA Sukhpal Singh Khaira had lost the Punjab Assembly elections this time to Bibi Jagir Kaur, there has been no change is his style of thundering at his individual, impromptu news conferences. At a news conference held to demand that the chief minister be “impleaded as an accused” in the Harpreet Kaur murder case,Khaira said Bibi Jagir Kaur must be also tried for female foeticide. He had to be reminded that the sex of the foetus was not known. But enthused by the media presence,he went on — “What action is (MP) Harsimrat Kaur taking against Bibi? She should pack up her Nanhi Chhaon programme and do household work like an ordinary housewife.”
