Mayor Arun Sood had to face an embarrassing situation Wednesday when no official turned up at the venue for a ‘Swacch Bharat Abhiyan’ event at Sukhna lake. From 9.15 am to 9.30 am, Sood kept looking for the officials and realised that nobody was there.
Interestingly, Municipal Corporation (MC) Commissioner Baldeo Purushartha was scheduled to start off the drive at 11.30 am at the same venue where all the officials of the MC reached. However, they had failed to turn up earlier in the morning when the Mayor reached the venue to start the drive.
Shocked after finding himself alone at the venue, Sood along with his security personnel kept looking for officials at the entrance and exit side of the Sukhna Lake but found no one.
A miffed Sood then called up Chief Engineer (CE) Mukesh Anand and told that although the media had reached the venue, there was no sign of any preparations for the drive. Anand, who was on his way to the UT Secretariat for a meeting rushed to Sukhna Lake.
Sood then asked them to “make arrangements” following which the Chief Engineer hurriedly called a few gardeners and sweepers to the spot. They all then got pictures clicked while picking up the ‘already collected’ garbage.
Sood said, “Sukhna lake comes under the jurisdiction of the administration so that is why there must have been some confusion and MC officials did not reach. But the administration officials were there.”
When pointed out that the MC Chief Engineer had reached after his call, Sood said the CE was holding the charge of the administration as well.
After spending just five minutes at the venue, Sood then left with the Chief Engineer, saying he was getting late for a meeting of the coordination committee with the Administration.
Sources said the Mayor pulled up the Chief Engineer, telling him how embarrassing it was for him to be there at the venue alone.
Rajiv Gupta, Joint Commissioner said, “The Commissioner held a thematic drive at Sukhna lake and everybody was there. The Mayor must have held the drive at his own level first.”
“It was a mere photo-op in the morning. The officials came, got pictures clicked and left. This was not a proper cleanliness drive,” said Vidhi, a resident.
Interestingly, the pictures released by the MC of the drive were only those of the Municipal Commissioner’s.
