The decision to set up research centres in city colleges for subjects other than science remains on paper, ever since it was announced in 2014. Raising the issue at a meeting held Sunday, Senators were of the view that research centres should not only be confined to Panjab University. “In 2014, the issue was brought to light and the University had agreed to set up research centres in the fields related to science, commerce, languages and social sciences. However, the university apart from setting up some science centres has not given a nod to the various applications submitted to him regarding the setting up of centres pertaining to commerce, languages etc,” said Senator Dalip Kumar.

A few centres dealing with science have been opened by the University but for other courses like commerce, languages, social sciences, such plans are stuck. GGDSD Sector 32 had submitted an application to PU for setting up a commerce centre in the college two years ago which is pending ever since. “We haven’t received any response as of now regarding the application that we had sent to set up a commerce centre” said Principal of GGDSD College Bhushan Kumar Sharma.

Principal of Postgraduate Government College, Sector 11 J.K Sehgal said, “ Research should be conducted in all the colleges having Post Graduation courses. Somehow, the university wants that the research should only be confined to it and colleges should not be allowed to conduct it in other fields.” As per the amended UGC guidelines the Academic Performance Indicator(API) for University and College teachers is the same. Speaking on that Kumar said, “ College teachers should not be discriminated from those in the University. The implementation will help in broadening the vision of the teachers. It will also open new horizons for them as they will indulge in research oriented teaching. Moreover, it will help them improve the Teachers Academic Performance Indicator as well.”
