In a move to increase English language proficiency among its students,the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has recommended that schools introduce formal testing of speaking and listening skills in the form of Formative Assessments (FA) in the current academic session.
The board has recommended that the schools should introduce the testing exercises for students at secondary and senior secondary levels.
CBSE envisages that all language skills need to be integrated into the English language curriculum at schools. Speaking and listening should be fostered in children to equip them with better communication skills. In todays world where national and international boundaries have no existence for a global citizen,English language has acquired the role of an important medium of communication, reads the circular sent across to schools recently.
In order to help the schools in examining the language skills among the students,the CBSE has planned to develop a cohort of oral examiners who will be involved in testing of speaking and listening skills in English at the senior and senior secondary levels. The board is currently looking for suitably qualified and experienced individuals to join the team of oral examiners.
At present,students of classes IX and X are being assessed under continuous and comprehensive evaluation (CCE) via a number of practical assessments in all the subjects. The officials,however,emphasise that for attaining proficiency in language,specific teaching and evaluation methods need to be introduced.
Tests can be included in the formative assessments in Class IX and X under CCE. For Class XI and XII,the proficiency test can be a part of the internal assessments, said CBSE regional director R J Khanderao.
