The accident happened when a Himachal Road Transport Corporation (HRTC) bus collided head-on with the Zen car in which all the four persons were travelling.

According to the police, the car was coming from Zirakpur side towards Chandigarh and Shaminder was driving the car while Aaftabh was sitting along with the driver. When the car reached the Tribune chowk in Sector 29, Shaminder took left turn towards Transport Light Point from the roundabout but the bus which was heading towards Shimla rammed into the car, leaving all the students seriously injured. Aaftabh suffered severe injuries on his chest and stomach.

All the injured were taken to the Government Medical College and Hospital, Sector 32, where Aaftabh succumbed to injuries. The police are yet to record a statement of the injured students. Police officials said that they were investigating the matter and it was not clear whether the students were drunk.
