A CHANDIGARH BSP councillor on Friday alleged sexual harassment by four youths in a Sector 5 hotel on the night before. However, later in the evening, one of the girls accompanying the youths levelled similar allegations against the councillor’s husband.
The police said no case had been registered, as they were still verifying the allegations. The police had summoned both the parties at 11 am on Saturday.
The incident was reported late on Thursday night when the BSP councillor, Jannat Jahan, had gone for dinner with her husband Hafiz Anwar-ul-Haq and children.
“Around 12.15 am, when we were preparing to leave, around four youths started misbehaving with me. When I confronted them, they hit me with the butt of a pistol on my left arm and assaulted me. When my husband intervened, they started levelling allegations against him for misbehaving,” she told Chandigarh Newsline.
In her written complaint to the police, the BSP councillor alleged sexual harassment by the four youths and demanded police action. Acting on the complaint, the police conducted her medical examination in the General Hospital, Sector 6, in the afternoon.
When contacted, Assistant Commissioner of Police Dalip Kumar said, “We have received the complaint, and the medical examination has also been done. But we are still in the process of verifying the allegations. The CCTV footage of the incident will be checked after which the final call will be taken.”
However, later in the evening, the police said that a complaint had been submitted by the opposite party as well, levelling similar allegations against Jahan and her husband. No case was registered at the time of filing this report.
“We have received a complaint from one of the girls from the opposite party, Mehak Bansal, a resident of Zirakpur. She has levelled allegations of sexual harassment against Jannat Jahan’s husband. The allegations are being verified and the matter is under investigation,” he said.
When contacted, general manager, Bella Vista, Avinash Deshmukh said, “The incident was reported between two parties on the sixth floor, where an event was under way. We are co-operating with the police and have given the CCTV footage to them.”
