Punjab Human Rights Organisation (PHRO) Chairman Justice (Retd) Ajit Singh Bains on Wednesday appealed to Akal Takht chief Giani Gurbachan Singh to name former chief minister Beant Singh’s assassin Balwant Singh Rajoana as the Akal Takht chief to save the from going to gallows and getting the capital punishment remitted by citing the case of former Akal Takht chief Ranjit Singh. Ranjit Singh was jailed for 14 years for the 1980 murder of Nirankari sect chief Gurbachan Singh. He was serving the sentence when he was named the Akal Takht chief. After serving 13 years of imprisonment,he took over as the Akal Takht chief in 1996 after being released on bail.

Meanwhile,on the ground that a petition challenging the sentence awarded by a special CBI Court in the Beant Singh assassination case is pending before the Supreme Court,a Chandigarh-based NGO on Wednesday moved the Punjab and Haryana High Court seeking a stay on the hanging of Balwant Singh.

‘Take action against accused drug sellers’

With the district drug inspector failing to prosecute six shopkeepers for stocking and selling allopathic drugs without a valid license,the Jalandhar division commissioner has directed the Gurdaspur civil surgeon to initiate legal again against the six under the Drugs and Cosmetics Act and file cases in court within 15 days. “These premises of the accused have been raided over an year ago. Prosecution orders from State Drug Controller had also been received a few months ago but the district drug inspector had failed to initiate proceedings,” said Commissioner Anurag Verma.
