Following opposition from various student bodies on Panjab University campus regarding AICC general secretary Rahul Gandhi’s visit, security guidelines were issued prohibiting black objects in the tent.

Black bags, handkerchiefs and even turbans were initially not being allowed in the tent. While most students were allowed in after a thorough physical search, some were told not to carry their black bags inside. The most important search item, however, remained black handkerchiefs. All boys were made to show the colour of their handkerchiefs before they could enter the tent.

While initially, black and saffron turbans were not being allowed in,they were later permitted owing to the rush of students near the gates. “I was not allowed to go in because I was carrying a black bag. The police said that I could keep the bag at the gate and collect it later, but it wouldn’t be their responsibility,” said one of the harrowed students.

The blaring music and songs of Punjabi singer Sharry Mann, which started around 11:30 am,was the star attraction for many students attending the ‘interaction’. However,it made attending classes very difficult for students whose departments were close to the programme area. “Parking was a major issue today. I had to park my bike in one of the boys’ hostels and walk to my department,” said Devansh,a student of mass communication.
